I'm not exactly the type of person to base my travel plans on where I'm going to eat. When it comes to sustenance, it's the last thing on my mind until it's the ONLY thing on my mind. During our stay in NYC we walked so much and saw a ton. For most meals we just picked up something from a deli or food cart and kept on trucking. Meals-to-go seem to be a pretty common thing in this busy city. That said, we definitely enjoyed some great food in New York. The most memorable of meals for us was at Grimaldi's in Brooklyn near Empire Fulton Ferry.
After a full day of walking the Highline , checking out Chelsea Market, strolling across the Brooklyn Bridge and seeing the sights in Brooklyn Bridge park, we were famished! My mom heard from friends that she had to check out Grimaldi's Pizzeria, which was both delicious and a good deal. We completely lucked out on this one, finding it a couple blocks from where we were at Jane's Carousel.
At 5:00 we just missed standing in the lineup, which crowded in front of the small restaurant by 5:30 pm. No wonder why, the pizza was hand tossed before you, oven baked, and completely wonderful! If you are in the area visiting, I highly recommend you throw this one on your itinerary. If you don't want a long wait, make sure to plan to be there for a late lunch or early dinner like we did. Expect the ambiance of a heritage building. The decor is a bit worn, but as authentic as it gets. We found it to be family friendly and well worth saving up an appetite for. Sigh . . . I can taste it now . . .
