Have you ever made your own fruit ornaments for the holidays? It's a fun, inexpensive activity to do with someone (or some little ones) you love. I welcome any pastime that keeps us out of the busy stores and promotes spending more time together. I shared a bit about this on my Instagram @lunevintage, but here are a few detailed pictures and instructions to get you started in making your own set of natural orange slice ornaments. This technique would work well with limes, lemons and small grapefruits as well.
Pre-heat your oven to 170 degrees F
Slice large thick skinned oranges
Cut your orange width-wise in thin segments, with a serrated knife. The thinner you can slice them, the better the result will be.
Lay wet slices on a paper towel to absorb the juice
Place the slices in the oven for 4-5 hours
I used a cooking mat, but you could also use a baking rack or a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Do not substitute for wax paper, it will transfer to the oranges and start to smoke in the oven.
Turn slices once an hour
This will help facilitate faster drying time. You will know your oranges are done when the "meat" is thinned and darkened.
Remove from heat and allow to cool in the window
Spear with a point
Make the hole at the top, just below the rind. Any small pointy tool will work : a craft hole punch, a crochet needle, even a wooden skewer. This is where you will string your loop of choice.
Add a hanger
Use ribbon, yarn, jute twine, or wire to hang your natural orange slice ornaments on the tree. These make great presents themselves, or a lovely decoration to tie on to a wrapped gift. Make extra!
